Frequently Asked Questions

How do I find out if my child is eligible for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme?

You do not need to apply or register for the Child Dental Benefits Scheme. If your child is eligible, you will be sent a letter from the Department of Human Services.

To be eligible, you or your child will be receiving one of the following benefits:

  • Family Tax Benefit Part A
  • Parenting Payment
  • Double Orphan Pension
  • Abstudy
  • Carer Payment
  • Disability Support Pension
  • Special Benefit
  • Youth Allowance
  • Department of Veterans’ Affairs Education Allowances

You can also contact Medicare on 132 011 or check your Medicare online account.

What if my child is not eligible?

We can provide a dental examination, cleaning and remineralisation treatment as needed for your child at a cost of $99 if aged under 2 years and $150 if aged 2 or over. Once your child is at school our private fee is $199. If you are a member of a health fund, you should be able to claim this back through your fund.

Please check with your health fund.

How do I register my child for your service?

You can register your child by either completing their registration online or you can complete a manual contact form which would have been sent home through your child’s school or child care centre.

When I go to register my child online, I am unable to select my child’s school or child care centre. What can I do?

You will only be able to register your child if we are currently taking registrations for your child’s school or child care centre. If you do not see your school or centre listed, please request for them to schedule a visit either through our website or by contacting us directly at admin@funsmiles.com.au or calling us on 07 2112 5991.

What does a dental check up include?

Your child will receive, a comprehensive dental examination, cleaning and tooth remineralisation agent application as required.

Evaluation of all teeth, their supporting tissues and the oral tissues in order to record the condition of these structures. This evaluation includes recording an appropriate medical history and any other relevant information. Medical history and consent forms will be provided to families for completion prior to the date of examination.

Removal of dental plaque and/or calculus from the surfaces of teeth. We will use a scaling instrument and/or prophylactic polish and brush depending on the child’s level of comfort and need.

Application of remineralisation and/or cariostatic agents to the surfaces of the teeth, dependent on need.

What if my child is scared?

Our clinicians are used to working with fearful patients of all ages. Our commitment is that children feel comfortable and confident seeing a dental practitioner from a young age. We will only ever proceed with whatever your child is comfortable with.

When will my child be seen for their dental check?
You will be contacted by a member of the Fun Smiles team a few days prior to your child’s dental check and informed which day your child will be seen.
What if my child needs additional treatment?
If we find your child requires any additional treatment, we will contact you to discuss your child’s needs.
What if I have something I would like to communicate with you about my child?

If there is anything you would like to communicate with us, please contact one of the friendly members of the Fun Smiles team either through the Contact Us page via the website, by email at admin@funsmiles.com.au or by phone on 07 2112 5991.

What does your Educational Session with the dental team involve?

Our Educational Programs are designed to be fun interactive sessions tailored to the appropriate age of the children. Children will be taught about healthy and unhealthy food choices for the health of their teeth. They will be shown how to brush their teeth by the assistance of ‘Magi The Dragon’. They will also be taught what can happen to teeth if they aren’t looked after properly.

Children will then get to complete some fun dental activities back in their classrooms.

How will you let me know what you found during my child’s dental check?

All children will be sent home with a report form. If there is anything further we need to communicate with you about, you will be contacted by a member of the Fun Smiles team.

When will you see my child again?
In line with current recommendations, we will make a return visit to your child’s school or child care centre in 6 months time.
